SMD is proud to sponsor a Reading Session by Gary Packwood on September 15 at the Jackson State University Symposium. Dr. Packwood is the Program Administrator and Director of Choral Activities at Mississippi State University. He leads and conducts the Women of State, Men of State, and the MSU Singers. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Packwood served in similar positions at Louisiana State University and the University of Montevallo. Dr. Packwood has conducted All-State and festival honor choirs in 27 states, Asia, Europe, and South America. Ensembles under his leadership have performed at Carnegie Hall and The White House. Dr. Packwood makes frequent appearances at National Association for Music Education and the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). A Lifetime member of ACDA, he was President-elect of ACDA-Alabama and is currently the President for Southern Division-ACDA chapter. He publishes in the Choral Journal, the MENC journal and Teaching Music. He also contributed to the 2nd Edition of the AmeriGrove Dictionary and edits his own Gary Packwood Series for Santa Barbara Music Publishing.
Dr. Packwood’s Reading Session at the JSU Choral Symposium will focus on literature that engages young singers, especially in Middle School and High School The Reading focuses on six selections of this year’s new issues by Carl Fischer, supplemented by selections from his own Gary Packwood Series, Kjos, Walton Music. Lorenz and Hal Leonard. He is especially proud to present “Letter from a Girl to the World”, a selection from Houston based Alliance Music Publishing, who contributed to the Reading in the midst of Hurricane Harvey. The Reading selections were chosen to highlight specifically how adolescents come together and proactively stand up for unity, human dignity and social justice.
